for KING & COUNTRY
Fix My Eyes

Featured on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno as a debut artist, gathering “New Artist of the Year” and “Breakthrough Artist of the Year” awards, and having the top-selling debut release from 2012 in its genre, for KING & COUNTRY launches into its next season with a new album and major market, 40-city fall tour.
Comprised of brothers Joel and Luke Smallbone, the duo embarks on their “You Matter - The Tour” Sept. 14 in Nashville in support of their sophomore release, “Run Wild, Live Free, Love Strong,” the highly-anticipated album releasing Sept. 16 and available now for pre-order.

After only a few weeks, the first single from the CD, “Fix My Eyes,” is already at #4 on Billboard’s Contemporary Christian Music charts. (Click Here for Full Top 25 Chart).

A FAMILY AFFAIR - The Smallbone brothers grew up in a Christian home in Sydney, Australia where music always had a strong presence.  Their dad was a successful concert promoter who moved the family to Nashville in the nineties.

Their sister, Rebecca St. James, released her first album at the age of 16 and was on the fast track as a young contemporary Christian artist.

Relocating with their family to Nashville, TN, Joel and Luke remember music being a constant presence in their life. Growing up in a large family of seven kids, the siblings began their creative experimentation early on, soaking up life experiences that would influence their musical future. Her brothers, Joel now 29 and Luke now 27, were her stage managers. They handled everything for more than ten years.

“Our father was a promoter in Australia and so we grew up as a musically-centered family. I remember going to these rock shows, sitting on his shoulders, plugging my ears. It was very influential at an early age and I saw the power of music and how a melody fused with a lyric can impact someone’s life,” recalls Joel. “Honestly, in a lot of ways I feel like music chose me and as I grew older, I made a clear decision to fully lean into it.”

When Joel and Luke talked about starting their own band, they already had hands-on training.  Running Rebecca's music ministry allowed them to have a real vantage point into the power of music.

“We understand how music impacts peoples' lives.  We want people to leave with value and hope," says Joel.

Luke and Joel wrote 150 songs for their first record.  Their hit single, “Proof of Your Love,” from the Crave album was a song written based on 1 Corinthians 13.  Joel wanted to write a song that would gently nudge and encourage people yet challenge them at the same time.  The song hit the Top Ten and their video topped the iTunes Christian Video Charts.

Shortly after their record released in February 2012, Luke was diagnosed with a serious digestive disorder.  The rigorous demands of the tour proved to be too much. Luke was bedridden, and Joel was forced to perform 40-50 shows without his partner.  At 6’4” Luke lost so much weight and was down to 125 pounds. “Even our mother was alarmed at his weight loss,” says Joel.

Eventually, Luke worked through the mental, physical and emotional toll his body was going through and by the grace of God, Joel says, “he somehow turned the story.”  Luke is not out of the woods yet, but there is a newfound kindred spirit that has developed between them as partners and brothers. “Not to be cliché,” says Joel, “but the key to our success has been that this is God’s journey and not our own.”

One of the things that the Smallbone brothers believe is that God’s Word is living and fresh.  “It’s not stale and stagnant,” says Joel.  “It’s fresh and revolutionary and hopefully we present that in a way that God willing, people will respond.”

RESPECT AND HONOR - Rebecca has been a popular women’s conference speaker during her career and both Joel and Luke were exposed to quite a bit of female conversation.  They learned a lot about a woman’s worth.

“It’s time for men to step up in relationships,” says Joel, who has been married for 4 months.  Luke has been married for 3 years.  “Society suggests that women talk, act or dress cheap,” says Joel.  “We believe there’s a God who thinks women are priceless.”  This is a message Joel and Luke try to share at every opportunity.

“It’s astounding to see the heart to heart connection with women,” says Joel.  “It’s shocking to hear the response.”  They believe women are worth more than all the money in the world.

“While working on our debut record, I came up with the idea of calling us ‘All the Kings Men,’ but it just didn’t fit exactly with what we were looking for,” said Luke. “We were in the studio with our producer and he said, ‘what about for king and country?’ The history of that phrase is that back in the olden days, the British would go into battle shouting, chanting, ‘For King and Country,’ sort of as an anthem of fighting for something that they believed wholeheartedly in. We all looked at each other in the studio and we just knew that was it.”

With tracks produced by Shaun Shankel, Aqualung and Ben Glover, for KING & COUNTRY’s debut album, Crave, was released two years ago as a vibrant collection of songs, marked by emotional honesty and a riveting transparency. The first single, “Busted Heart (Hold On to Me)” was inspired from a conversation on the brokenness that every person feels at some point in their life.

“There comes those defining moments in each of our lives where we so severely need someone to hold on to us,” explains Joel. “It seems we are all, in different ways, shapes and forms, busted to some degree. This song is an honest confessional of: ‘I can’t do this thing called life on my own. I need something, or more specifically, someone greater than myself to hold on to me.”

For KING & COUNTRY’s music continued to gain momentum with fans and peers alike as several album tracks from Crave were featured in primetime television spots. “Love’s to Blame” and “People Change” were featured on the popular The CW series, “The Vampire Diaries” and “Light It Up” and “Sane” was heard on the Lifetime network’s “Drop Dead Diva.”

Poignant stories were merely one of the many that sparks for KING & COUNTRY’s underlying message and what ultimately drives both Joel and Luke in the authenticity behind their music and lyrics.
“We want to deliver a message that is about believing in something much bigger than oneself,” explains Luke. “The title track of the album has a line in the chorus that very plainly says, ‘hope is what we crave.’ You can confidently go through the ups and downs in your life because you know that life isn’t all about you and what you do but rather the hope and salvation of Christ.”
That brings up to present and the release of their second CD.

“While Crave was a great foundational piece, particularly if you have seen us live, you will see this springboard into a new and more developed version of what for KING & COUNTRY is with the rhythm and all of these different components,” says Joel, reflecting on the new album.

“One of the things that is really exciting with the album overall is that we have about 300-plus shows under our belts at this point with a group of guys that have become like brothers. We have made these discoveries along the way—our love for rhythm, our excitement for theatrics. These sorts of things have naturally found themselves inside the new record.”

With soaring melodies, driving rhythms and powerful, personal themes of “Run Wild, Live Free, Love Strong,” for KING & COUNTRY has created an album that lives up to the band’s name, a reflection of standing and fighting for something bigger than yourself, a mission statement that drove the duo from the first words written for this project until the last note was recorded.
“We want to be known for writing music that is authentic, real and from the heart,” adds Joel. “Music has been a very therapeutic thing for us. There’s a lot of blood, sweat and tears that went into this record and what spurred us on is this whole idea that we can make a difference. That music, our music, can have the power to impact someone’s life for the better.”

“Run Wild, Live Free, Love Strong,” is a statement of reclaiming our birthright as humans to live a life that is for others--a life that is others-focused, God-focused—and in that find what it truly means to run wild, live free and love strong,” says Joel.
