Tamela Mann talks Grammy-nom,
Reality TV, Marriage

Sometimes the best way to move forward is honor the past, and Grammy Award® nominated, NAACP Image Award® winning artist Tamela Mann does just that on her new album One Way. Not only does the gifted singer flirt with some old school sounds sure to immediately get hearts racing and hands in the air, lyrically Mann taps into the roots of her deep faith to powerfully share the gospel that has always sustained her.
The chart topping vocalist’s success encompasses TV, theater, film and music. Her 2012 album, Best Days, debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Top Gospel Albums chart and No. 14 on the all-genre Billboard Top 200.
Mann earned the Stellar Award for Best Female Gospel Artist of the Year along with seven additional Stellars in 2014 as well as Best Gospel Artist at the 2014 BET Awards. Best Days was certified gold and set an industry and personal record for Mann.

The project spawned three consecutive chart-topping singles including the track that has sold nearly one million copies - “Take Me To The King,” which Mann performed across the country on tour and on television shows such as The View, BET Awards, The Stellar Awards, Dove Awards, and on the Gospel music PBS White House special before President Obama and Mrs. Obama.

Mann continues the momentum with the album One Way. The album’s title track, “One Way,” is written and produced by Eric Dawkins, and is a vibrant anthem that showcases Mann’ s award-winning voice and passionate heart for sharing the truth of Jesus Christ.
“This is a totally different sound for Tamela Mann,” she says with a smile. ”I wanted to do something on the title track with an old school vibe and when Eric played this for me, it made me think of the early ‘70’s and ‘80’s. Even though I hadn’t told him what I had in mind, it was right on point to what I was hoping for so we were off to a wonderful start on the project.”

As much as she was drawn to the song’s cool vibe, Mann was even more excited about the message.
“The lyric was very important for me,” she says. “When I heard ‘One Way,’ I thought, ‘It has the beat and the message that I wanted to communicate---that Jesus Christ is the answer.’ There’s only one way to get to Jesus Christ and it’s through accepting, believing, and confessing that He died and rose for us.”

It’s a message that Mann has devoted her life to sharing. The youngest of 14 children, she grew up in Texas in a Christian home that was filled with love and music. She began singing in church at eight-years-old and by the time she was 12, she was a featured vocalist at the Holy Tabernacle Church. Not long after her high school graduation, she met her husband and business partner, actor David Mann and his friend Kirk Franklin, who recruited her to be part of his pioneering group, The Family.
After five albums with Franklin, she took up acting and pursued a career in the theater. Acclaimed actor/writer/producer Tyler Perry enlisted Mann to appear in his play “I Can Do Bad All By Myself.”
She continued to work with Perry, developing the character of Cora Simmons in his plays and such films as “Diary of a Mad Black Woman,” “Madea Goes to Jail” and 2011’s “Madea’ s Big Happy Family.” She and David starred in the No. 1 TBS comedy series, “Meet the Browns.”
The hard-working couple is currently in production on the third season of the popular Bounce TV sitcom “Mann and Wife” and their own family reality show “It’s A Mann’ s World” on BET, where fans see Tamela and David behind the camera -- at home, attending exclusive events, and spending time with famous friends, all while balancing being celebrities, entrepreneurs and parents to a blended family of five adult children while nurturing their marriage and relationship with each other.

In everything she does, whether its acting or music, Mann’ s sense of urgency in her ministry drives a passionate sense of purpose. She places the Lord first and she’ s always conscious of reaching people for the kingdom.

“I feel like we as Christians and we as Gospel artists have something to say and a message to share - and we have to come through for the Lord,” Mann says. For the first time, Mann’s executive production team is a family affair, helmed by Tamela, husband David and son David Mann Jr.
 One Way
is produced by the acclaimed Myron Butler and David Mann. The album’s all-star guest producer credits include several of the industry’s top writer/producers - longtime friend and collaborater Kirk Franklin, King Logan, Shaun Martin and Timbaland.

“This album has been a labor of love,” she notes. “Songs by some of the best writers and producers from different genres all came together to fit into a beautiful puzzle. It’s my prayer: ‘I’m looking to you Lord to go before me and bless the hearts of the people and give them a heart to receive because I want them to hear the message that you are coming.’

”On the highly- anticipated album, One Way, Mann delivers that message through a collection of powerful songs. Sometimes upbeat and in-your-face, sometimes vulnerable and poignant, the album is a diverse collection that connects with believers on multiple levels.
 “The Potter”
is a powerful track brought to life by Mann’ s emotion-laden vocals. “Travis Greene wrote ‘Potter.’” Mann says. “It talks about the Lord making us, then making us whole again after we’ve been broken in our lives.”

“God Provides” is a beautiful ballad written by “Take Me To The King” writer/producer Franklin. Mann’ s compelling voice wrings every ounce of emotion from the heartfelt lyric.
“Kirk told me that as he was thinking about writing a song for my album, he began to pray, ‘Lord, I’m not writing for Tam. I’m just going to write a song. Lord just give me a song,’” Mann relates. “So one night he had been going through some different things and thinking about life like all of us do. He said as he was asleep the Lord woke him up and said, ‘God provides.’ He said he went to the piano and the words kept coming to him.”

During the recording of One Way, Mann also worked with acclaimed producer Timbaland, whose body of work has been in mainstream music. “We became friends some years ago when I sang at his wedding. Since then, we would talk about him producing a track for me,” Mann says of the collaboration.
“We finally got to work together on this album. He produced a song called ‘Through it All’ and I think it’s amazing.”

On One Way, Mann has crafted a collection of songs that are encouraging and celebrate who God is and how much He loves us. Musically Mann’s surrounded herself with cutting edge producers to bring a fresh and unexpectedly exciting new take on her music, yet there’ s an old school vibe to some of the tracks that will make people reminisce and smile. “I’ m putting my best efforts forward so people can feel my heart in these songs,” Mann says.

“I’ve asked the Lord to go before and open people’ s hearts to receive these songs and when they’ re with me in concert, I pray, ‘God, don’t let them see me. Let them see you in me.’ That’s always my prayer.”
