 Hillsong Worship's Brooke Fraser (Ligertwood)
'Church songs are the
ultimate pop music'

By Sophie Bateman, Newshub

After dominating airplay and the CCM charts for the past year, Hillsong Worship won the Grammy award for Best Contemporary Christian Music Performance/Song for What a Beautiful Name. In a statement posted to Twitter celebrating their victory that night, Hillsong Worship emphasized the message of What a Beautiful Name.
"JESUS. The most incredible Name & has transformed our lives. Thanks @BrianCHouston @bobbiehouston & team," tweeted the official Hillsong account.
"No matter how far/close u feel 2 God, His love is greater, His Name more powerful/wonderful/beautiful than any other. May this glorify #JESUS."

It also picked up the Dove Award for Song of the Year and Worship Recorded Song of the Year.
The song remains at #1 where it has been at or near since its release over 70 week ago.
Preceding it with even more longevity was the phenomenal "Oceans (Where Feet May Fail," by Hillsong United, which was #1 for an astounding 50 straight weeks and remained in the top 5 three almost 200 weeks after it was released!
Hillsong UNITED's latest CD, "Wonder" debuted at #13. The sixth studio album from the worship music collective was released on June 9, 2017, topping Billboard's Top Christian Albums chart.
The launch single and title track from "Wonder," reached the top 15 followed by "
So Will I (100 Billion X)," which entered the charts at #8.
And, although the band has had a great impact on both the church community and young Hollywood they say their main objective is to walk in obedience and devotion to God.
"What a Beautiful Name" became the praise and worship band's first leader on Billboard's Hot Christian Songs chart in February 2017. Featured on Hillsong Worship's 25th live album, Let There Be Light, What A Beautiful Name continues to break chart records.

After 15 years of songwriting success, Brooke Fraser has won a Grammy - but not as Brooke Fraser.
The Kiwi singer was awarded Best Contemporary Christian Music Performance/Song for 'What A Beautiful Name', which she wrote and performed for worship group Hillsong.
When Newshub spoke to her she'd just returned from the ceremony at Madison Square Garden in New York City, which was "wonderful but a little bit chilly".
Her favorite performances were by Kesha and the "unbelievable" Kendrick Lamar, as well as Emmylou Harris and Chris Stapleton's tribute to Tom Petty.
S  he's disappointed that Lorde missed out on Album of the Year, whom she "stood and cheered for" when the nominations were read out.
"But I think it's such a thrill to be nominated. Whether you win or lose, to be nominated for a Grammy is such an amazing acknowledgement of your work, and obviously all New Zealanders are so proud of her and everything she's accomplished."
She counts herself as one of Lorde's biggest fans.
  "I love her to death."
This year's ceremony followed in the footsteps of the highly politicised Golden Globes a few weeks ago, with many musicians voicing their support for the movement against sexual harassment and abuse.
Every member of Fraser's Grammys party wore either a 'Time's Up' badge or a white rose to show solidarity.
"I think it's a conversation that's been long overdue," says Fraser.
"Myself and all of Hillsong Worship that I'm representing tonight are all about equality and safety in the workplace for women and all people. Obviously that's a cause we can get behind."
Fraser is part of the 'core leadership team' for the Los Angeles branch of Hillsong Worship, and performs for the group under her married name, Brooke Ligertwood.
She's been writing worship songs alongside her more mainstream hits since 2005.
While much of the music she has released under the name Brooke Fraser contains Christian themes and imagery, her work with Hillsong allows her to fully express her faith.
"In some ways, church songs are the ultimate pop music," she says.
"Pop music is music that everyone can connect to and get on board with, and that's really the same with worship music. Ideally, it's music that you can come in to a church and sing, whether you're a mechanic or a singer or a doctor or a stay-at-home mum, that you would find a connection point in those lyrics which uplifts you, connects you to God and helps you on your own journey.
It was "a crazy deal and a great honor" to win a Grammy for a song she and fellow songwriter Ben Fielding originally hoped might help members of Hillsong's congregation.
Even being nominated was surreal, she says.
"It was genuinely something that had never occurred to me as a possibility."
'What A Beautiful Name' has more than 100 million views on YouTube, a fact Fraser was charmingly unaware of until midway through the interview.
"I don't regularly watch myself. I think that would be a bit weird."
She admits it's a "thrill" to know that a staggering number of people have heard her song.
"Tonight there was a beautiful tribute to the victims of the violence in Manchester and Las Vegas, which were obviously music events. We heard an amazing story about the song being played at one of those victim's funeral services."
As a New Zealand artist, it's especially powerful to see her creation having a global impact, she says.
"I think it's the greatest privilege as a songwriter to know that a song you've been involved with can bring any kind of comfort and hope to people.
"Honestly, I just feel honored to be a part of it all. I'm just a girl from Lower Hutt, you know?"

Hillsong Worship Tells The
"What A Beautiful Name" Song Story

What hides in the name of Jesus?

The name of Jesus encompasses more than we can hope or imagine - more beauty, more wonder, more power.

Most of the song "What A Beautiful Name" was penned in a glorified cubicle in the suburbs of Sydney over a few days in December 2015. From there, we spent months crafting the lyrics to riff on our core scriptures - Hebrews 1:1-4 and Colossians 1:15-20, 26-27 - yet be simple enough to make sense on a first reading.
Hebrews 1:1-4 expresses with clarity and conciseness the supremacy of Jesus Christ - the radiance of God's glory, the exact expression of His being, the creative conduit of His power. Jesus is God's Word: powerful, authoritative and utterly supreme. He is the wonder of salvation, who reconciled us to God.

"In the past God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets at many times and in various ways, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son" (Hebrews 1:1-2, NIV)

To know God and to worship Him ("to enjoy Him forever") is the most fundamental reason for our existence. As Jesus reveals the great mysteries of God, we come to know more of who God is, glimpsing new facets of His beauty, wonder and power.

"Beauty" evokes the tenderness of His love and the sweetness of His presence. "Wonder" speaks to our gratitude for salvation, awe at the lengths of His sacrifice. "Power" affirms His supremacy and Sovereignty - an exhortation to remember our access to the power of God in every situation, as we call upon and declare the Name of Jesus.

What a beautiful Name it is
What a wonderful Name it is
What a powerful Name it is
The Name of Jesus

Jesus has the Name above all others. Anything that we can name - from our greatest triumphs to our greatest challenges -comes under the authority of His Name. This song confesses that no greater beauty or source of wonder exists outside of Jesus, "the radiance of God's glory" (Hebrews 1:3). The song is also a statement that Jesus has no rival or equal. His power is unmatched and absolute.

Perhaps some of us understand God loves us through the death and resurrection of Jesus, but haven't grasped His power, ability and will to move strongly in our present circumstances. Or perhaps, we understand God as the supreme, omnipotent Deity He is, but have never known Him close and tender, as a friend acquainted with the depths of our humanity, knowing our flaws cannot perturb His love. Our prayer for this song is that we can all enter into a deeper, more lateral, revelation of the person of Jesus Christ - the epitome of beauty.
