What Lies Ahead for America?
What Lies Ahead for America?

Bri (Briana Babineaux)
Make Me Over

With a powerful voice, modern production, and a fresh, accessible image, Briana Babineaux (known to fans simply as Bri) represented a younger generation of fans of worship music.

Born in Hawaii and raised in Lafayette, Louisiana, Babineaux was raised by a single mother and spent much of her childhood in church, where she started singing in a gospel choir at the age of five.

Fifteen years later, she was atop the Billboard gospel charts with her debut album.

In 2012, she enrolled at the University of Louisiana-Lafayette, studying criminal justice. During her junior year, a friend secretly posted a video of Babineaux singing Tonex's "Make Me Over Again" to YouTube. The cover went viral and attracted the attention of Marquis Boone Enterprises. She signed with MBE and released her debut EP, I'll Be the One, in June 2015.

Her 2016 full-length debut, Keys to My Heart, included inspirational R&B-tinged gospel, hip-hop flourishes ("Love You Forever," written by Uncle Reece), and even intense rock edges ("Jacob's Song" and "I'm Desperate" with Sha' Simpson). Produced by Korey Bowie (Angie Stone, Casey J) and featuring songwriting assistance from Bryan Andrew Wilson, the album was recorded before a live studio audience of family, friends, and fans at Atlanta's Doppler Studios. It was the first album to debut at the top of the Billboard gospel charts without the aid of radio and television or previous sales, selling 5,000 copies in its first week

The college student-turned-gospel music success story came into her celebrity one night in 2015 after a bad breakup.

The University of Louisiana student worked through her grief by covering Tonéx’s new standard, “Make Me Over.” Already a popular song, Babineaux’s version of the piece was recorded and posted on YouTube. Within hours, the video had gone viral. Within weeks she was covering other songs by request. Within a year, Bri garnered some 400,000 Instagram followers.

Today she is one of gospel’s newest faces and freshest voices. Nominated for three Stellar Awards and celebrating the popularity of 2016’s debut release “Keys To My Heart,” it looks like her rejection of several major label R&B contracts was the right decision.

And, "Make Me Over" has just entered Billboard's Gospel Music Charts Top 25 at #17.

"I never thought I'd be a singer,” said the University of Louisiana student who juggles classes, her own ministry and her gospel career. “I wasn’t trying to get into the music industry. I didn’t want to sing R&B. If I was going to sing for anybody, I wanted to sing for God.”

When she inked a deal with Marquis Boone Enterprises and Tyscot Records, she hoped to show that her focus on faith is a recipe for success.

The Harbinger captured the attention of more than 1 million people this year with its prophetic warning to America. But the book’s ongoing implications should be the real concern behind this profound revelation.

What happens when a nation ignores God’s warnings and the call to return to Him? What happens to nations that actually return to God?

Regardless of how much the world mocks Christians for believing that God’s Word is absolute truth, there are biblical principles and patterns concerning the judgment or redemption of nations—and this revelation holds profound meaning for America.

I wrote about these principles in The Harbinger, a prophetic wake-up call for America released in January 2012 that has since sold more than 1 million copies. The message has obviously resonated with people from all walks of life (it spent the entire year on the New York Times best-seller list), yet there is far more to this continuing story.

It begins more than 2,700 years ago, when God repeatedly called ancient Israel to return to Him after the people He birthed opted to turn away from their God. The very words of the Torah, spoken through Moses to their ancestors in Leviticus 26 and Deuteronomy 28, were His first call and His foretelling future calamity if they failed to repent. When the people of Israel’s northern kingdom ignored those words, God sent His prophets to confront them face-to-face with their transgressions.

Even then the people and their leaders refused to listen, hardening their hearts to His message and persecuting the messengers. God finally allowed Israel’s enemies to breach His protective hedge around the nation. Though the subsequent damage was significant, it was limited—proving that even in judgment God was calling the nation to wake up, turn from its self-destructive course and be reconciled to Him.

Israel’s defiant answer to God’s final call is found in Isaiah 9:10: “The bricks have fallen down, but we will rebuild with hewn stones; the sycamores are cut down, but we will replace them with cedars.” Despite being in ruins, Israel vowed to rebuild itself stronger than ever—and without God.

Verse 11 describes the beginning of the tragic consequences of that defiance, the nation’s progression to judgment: “Therefore the Lord shall set up the adversaries of Rezin against him, and spur his enemies on.”

The answer continues in the verses that follow: “And they shall devour Israel with an open mouth. For all this His anger is not turned away, but His hand is stretched out still. ... The land is burned up. ... What will you do in the day of punishment, and in the desolation which will come from afar? To whom will you flee for help?” (Is. 9:12, 19; 10:3).

Thus, Isaiah 9:10 leads to a prophecy of national destruction, fulfilled when the Assyrians returned, laid siege for three years and destroyed the northern kingdom in 722 B.C., and exiled its people.

“My whole purpose is to make sure that young people know the importance in havin' a relationship with God, the importance in trusting Him, the importance in depending on Him, the importance to pray and say, ‘God, when I'm in need, I know how to call out to You. I know that there is nobody that can help me but You,’" said the artist. “God is cool and servin' God is even cooler.”

MOST PEOPLE PROBABLY
DON'T KNOW THAT...

I was an athlete at heart. I was a point guard on the basketball team. I played volleyball and I also ran track (400m hurdles). I was prom queen, was not a girlie girl, was senior class president and was in the Law Club.

WHEN I WAS YOUNGER

I hated to listen. I had behavior problems in school and my mother was constantly at my school. Today, I try to tell the youth to listen to their parents because they do have their best interest at heart.

MY SELF-CARE RITUAL INVOLVES

Exercising as often as I am able to and, for the most part, I try to eat healthy. I also believe in taking care of my skin, nails and hair to ensure I look and feel good on the inside and outside.

WHO INSPIRED YOU AS A KID
AND WHO INSPIRES YOU NOW?

My mom. She’s always giving to everybody. I’ve seen her go through a lot and she’s always remained a strong woman.

HOW DO YOU START THE DAY?

  With prayer
